Born Solána Imani Rowe on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey. SZA was born to a Muslim father who worked at CNN as an executive producer, while her Christian mother worked at AT&T as an executive. She has an older brother, Daniel, a rapper whose stage name is Manhattan, and an older half-sister, Tiffany Daniels. She grew up learning Muslim teachings.

SZA attended a Muslim prep school after her regular school. In 2011, after the September 11th terrorists attack, she put a stop to wearing her hijab due to bullying in 7th grade. She had her high school education at Columbia High School and graduated in 2008. After going to three different colleges she finally settled at Delaware State University where she pursued marine biology. However, she later stopped schooling in her final semester and started working to make money.
